Muddy Bites: a bag of ice cream cone bottoms

A whole company founded on the idea that the bottom of an ice cream cone is the best part of the ice cream cone. I’m not sure I totally agree, but I will say that it’s pretty darn good.

Muddy Bites Review

A failed Kickstarter campaign in 2018 turned into a successful one in 2019, all around the idea that the best part of a “sundae cone” is the last part.

Alex, Jarod, and Tyler have been friends for years. Growing up, they always loved eating sundae cones. In fact, they ate hundreds, if not thousands of ice cream cones throughout their years. They would get them anywhere they could imagine, grandma’s house, gas stations, ice cream trucks, grocery stores and more! However, what they cherished most was the bottom tip filled with chocolate.

Unfortunately, no one made the part they loved most. Figuring they weren’t the only ones completely obsessed with the tip of sundae cones, they took matters into their own hands by creating bite-sized waffle cones and filling them with delicious milk chocolate.

Just like that, Muddy Bites was born.

I keep getting stuck on the phrase “sundae cone.” I’m familiar with ice cream sundaes, and ice cream cones, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard the phrase “sundae cone.” But who am I to question guys who grew up in Le Mars, Iowa, officially designated as “The Ice Cream Capital of the World.”

Le Mars has been the home to Wells Enterprises Inc., makers of Blue Bunny® brand ice cream and dairy products, since the company’s founding by Fred H. Wells, Jr., in 1913. Today more ice cream is produced in Le Mars, Iowa, by a single company than in any other city in the world!

I assume the “sundae” part means it’s got some chocolate on top, which is how we get to the bottom of the cone being chocolate-filled.

Anyway…back to Muddy Bites. The cone bottoms come in three chocolate filled flavors — milk chocolate, dark chocolate and white chocolate. My friend Ash told me she’s not normally a white chocolate fan but enjoys the Muddy Bites version so that’s what she bought me. I later bought the dark chocolate flavor at a local store so I could get a sampling of both. And now I see on their blog that they have a variety pack of all three in one bag!

How Does It Taste?
Pretty dang good. What’s not to like? It’s a small waffle cone filled nearly to the top with chocolate. The chocolate is pretty good, both white and milk varieties. The cone could maybe have a bit more flavor (as cones go, it’s a tiny bit bland) but I guess the chocolate is supposed to be the star of the show anyway. I think they also got the chocolate-to-cone ratio down pretty well. I’m sure my brain wanted more chocolate, but any more chocolate and it would probably over power the cone, and then what’s the point?

Appearance and Expectations
I love the bag. The running cone logo is so happy and adorable, but it also fits well with the tone of the bag design. Also, how cool is it that they came through on their Insane Snacker promise from Kickstarter? The bag also gives you a very accurate expectation of what’s inside. And yet, I did think the cone would be a bit smaller until I opened the bag. If you look at the Muddy Bite it seems like just the right size to be the bottom of a full size ice cream cone.

Overall Opinion
Big fan. After finishing the white chocolate bag, I ran out and got the milk chocolate bag and I will definitely strive to make this a regular part of my sweet snack rotation. Could the cone be better? Sure. But it doesn’t have to be for this to be a delicious treat.

Rating

4/5 Adam Heart Eyes. A delicious sweet treat, but a better cone gets an extra Adam Heart Eyes.
