Toffee Coated Barbecue Pretzels are an Experience

I was a little nervous when I saw “sweet” barbecue on the front of the bag, but then I saw “toffee coated” and I knew it was going to be interesting. These pretzels most certainly are that, and delicious.

Sweet Barbecue Pretzel Review

🎶 Sweeeeet sweet sweet sweet sweet swine o’miiiiieeeeiinnee 🎶 Had that in my head the entire time I was eating these because they are made by Sweet Swine O’Mine Distributors. I assume they had this song in their head too when coming up with the name since their mascot looks a lot like Slash.

I bought these and really did not have high hopes. I thought, at best, the pretzels would be crunchy and the barbecue seasoning sprinkled on them would be fine. Then I saw “sweet” and got worried. Then I saw “toffee coated” in the description on the back and my jaw literally fell open. A toffee coated pretzel with barbecue seasoning??

How Does It Taste?
I have never tasted anything like this before. I’m used to sweet and spicy trail mix that might have a toffee coated something plus a spicy something else. It is very rare that I get a single object that is both sweet and savory all in one bite. The pretzels truly are coated in toffee. You can see the toffee sometimes coating the pretzel so thick that the holes are covered, or two pretzels are stuck together. When you bite in, you get the pretzel crunch, then some chewiness and sweetness from the toffee, and then a whole lot of zing from the barbecue seasoning. I wouldn’t necessarily call it “barbecue” seasoning. It’s almost more of a rye flavoring, oddly, but spicier. It all mixes together in your mouth to the very end. I didn’t know if I liked it at first, because I think my mouth was just so confused. But a few pretzels in, I was totally sold.

Appearance and Expectations
Upon closer inspection to the front of the bag, you do sorta maybe see some toffee on the pretzels. But it’s sparse and not at all accurate to what’s inside, which is why I was so surprised when I saw “toffee coated” in the description on the back! Also, the photo on the bag make the pretzels look much bigger than they actually are. I don’t see this as a negative necessarily, I just think the makers might want to use a different photo on the bag. Also, maybe simmer down about how many times you call yourselves barbecue champions. I get it, but if I’m eating pretzels, I care more about the toffee and the seasoning then I do about your barbecue rubs and smoked meats.

Overall Opinion
These are amazing. I really don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything quite like this before, and the flavor might not be for everyone. Are they the best snack and number one on my list? I don’t know. I wouldn’t eat these every day because the flavor is so strong. But I will greatly look forward to a bag every few months and will highly recommend them to anyone. I will also keep an eye out for their other flavors: Brown Sugar Hickory 😋; Honey Sriracha 🌶; Smokin’ Cherry 🤨
